MHADA deputy CEO Anil Wankhede says redevelopment of ageing layouts and a proposed rental housing policy are key priorities as the housing authority looks to expand affordable housing supply across Maharashtra.

Redevelopment and brownfield projects have emerged as major drivers of real estate activity across Maharashtra over the past two years, according to Anil Wankhede, deputy chief executive officer of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

In an interview with ETRealty, Wankhede discusses the housing authority’s focus on redevelopment of ageing housing layouts in cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nashik, many of which are over four decades old. He explains how MHADA is working with private developers to accelerate redevelopment while ensuring that new housing supply continues to serve the affordable housing segment.

The discussion also highlights the proposed rental housing policy being prepared by MHADA, which aims to create an ecosystem for rental housing across different segments, including students, working professionals and senior citizens.

Wankhede further shares insights on the strong demand for MHADA housing lotteries, the progress of major redevelopment projects, and the authority’s plans to address challenges related to cess buildings in Mumbai through policy reforms and redevelopment initiatives.
