Thane-Borivali tunnel project on verge of taking off, two bidders shortlisted

MUMBAI: Work on the ambitious Thane-Borivli underground tunnel plan is expected to begin soon as two bidders have been shortlisted for the project, which promises to cut travel time between the two places from 2 hours to 15 minutes.

- At present, there is connectivity between Borivli and Thane via Ghodbunder Road.
- This road, from Kashimira near Mira Road to Eastern Express Highway at Thane, is long and also has toll.
- The underground route will also take pressure off Ghodbunder Road, which is now witness to heavy traffic because of the construction of highrises along it.

Cost: Rs 8,900 crore
Depth of tunnel: 22 metres
Work Status: Geo-technical survey and hydraulic study undertaken. The project was proposed in 2015.
2 hours: Time currently taken to go by Ghodbunder Road.
15 minutes: Thane to Borivli via proposed underground road.
